Manchester City vs Crystal Palace January 16th 2016: Sergio Aguero Goal Analysis

Goal analysis and Tactical Breakdown:

  • The receiving player is under immediate pressure and prods the ball into the path of the attacking Midfielder who takes a touch out of his feet and shapes to shoot. 3 players quickly move to deny the space and block any shot.
  • Sergio Aguero is quickly closed down by three recovering players, David Silva and Yaya Toure create width and passing options either side. The ball is passed out wide.
  • Crystal Palace are in possession inside their own half. A midfielder gets caught in possession by David Silva and the ball falls to Sergio Aguero who turns and runs quickly at the exposed defensive line. Crystal Palace players move quickly to deny space and slow the counter attack down. They were Spread wide to aid in their possession of the ball and must quickly revert back to a compact unit to deny space.

  • Since this is a quick counter attack, there is nobody in the penalty area in a goal scoring position, so a cross into the area would prove ineffective. The player in position opts to pull the ball back to the edge of the area to Sergio Aguero who has held his run on the edge of the box.
  • The attacking midfielder fakes the shot and instead plays in the right midfielder who has joined in the attack. All three defenders are taken out of play by this one cleverly faked shot. Kevin De Bruyne now has time to look up and play a pass back into the more advanced position of Sergio Aguero who scores a simple tap in to complete a well worked team move.
