What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
I feel too many coaches judge the success of training sessions by the number of mistakes made by players. For example, if the players did not make many errors, the coach views it as a great session. This approach leads to sessions being too easy and slow. Instead, if we teach players that it’s ok to make mistakes, they take more risks in possession, and if we teach players how to deal with mistakes, they will become more mentally equipped to deal with setbacks in a game.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Open your mind to more than the game itself. There is so much great information relating to coaching in other sports, the business world, and other areas where pressure, communication, and elite performance exist.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
My exercises have changed quite a bit over the past ten years so haven’t really been impacted by one significant session. I still get excited by new ideas and different ways to deliver them.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Focusing too much on results and not paying attention to player development.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Find a coaching mentor; be an assistant to a coach who has many experiences at different levels.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
4v4+4 neutrals, defensive pressing into transition (possession based) Grid: 45×20 yds (l x w) split into 22.5 x 20 yds sides 4v4 in grid, 4 neutrals outside grid, 2 along the length and 2 on each end Team 1 is in possession and can use any of the 3 outside neutrals to keep possession (on one side of grid).

If team 2 intercept the ball they immediately look to play forward into the next grid to the far outside neutral player– when this happens all the players on both teams sprint and transition into the far grid. The two outside neutral sideline players will also shift down to make it 4+3 in possession in the new grid.

The exercise mimics the demands of the real game and enforces the speed of attacking transition and the importance of coordinated pressing.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Create practices that are too far away from the game. They must be game related and have an emphasis on decision making at all times. A skill (e.g. A pass) cannot be taught unless the decision of when to play the pass is included.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Make practices that are open and allow for players to be creative. Go as far away as you can from regimented practices where a player is told what to do or too restricted.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
I don’t think there is a one drill that has a greater impact on players. Remember to make practices game related and ensure that they are enjoyable.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Some coaches are guilty of quitting the Coach education process and therefore stop progressing.  Coaching should be regarded as a continuous learning process for both players and coaches.  They must continue to evolve which helps the players to progress. You don’t send kids to school to be taught by a teacher that doesn’t know the subject.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Be patient and learn. Go watch other coaches and be prepared to continuously have an open mind Believe in your own philosophy and have confidence in your own ability.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
Working on 1st touch. For me it’s the most important part of a players development once players develop and improve then they have a chance.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Many coaches, myself included, make the mistake of treating parents as uniformed individuals. In this day and age many families have become proactive in sleuthing on the Internet in order to do research and become a very informed decision maker. Many, though not all, have a good foundation of the game and can tell when a coach is treating them as if they don’t know what is going on.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
My #1 tip for new soccer coaches is DO NOT become complacent with the knowledge you have of the game.
You need to continue to seek new methodologies and learn everyday of your career. You do not know everything!

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
I use a lot of passing drills every single one of my teams. Teaching te players early on that the ball does move faster than an individual has improved team play in my teams.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Distracting their own players during games with “joystick” coaching. I’m a firm believer in doing your coaching in practice and then allowing the players to enjoy the games. That includes letting the players make their own decisions without being second-guessed and yelled at from the sidelines during play.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Focus on teaching the techniques and tactics that your players should master in order to play the game well. Trying to win your games is a given, but improving your level of play should be your #1 priority.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
3 v 2, Both Ways. So many important aspects of both attacking and defending can be taught during this drill.

What do you feel is the #1 mistake soccer coaches make?
Prioritizing short term gain over long term development. Young athletes are naturally built to get better through training, so short term gains are almost always present when an individual begins a new sport or an increased level of training to that from what they are already completing.

However, just like high school and university, there is a long term process in place which is there for the development of that individual. For example, if completing university within a six week period were possible, receiving a degree wouldn’t be held in the same regard as it currently is today. The same principles can be seen throughout soccer development. All coaches want to win every game they take part in of course but what we tend to forget is that maybe it’s not about our results on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, but more so about the constant development of the individuals who took part and where that development might lead them in the future.

What is the #1 tip you have for new soccer coaches?
Always, always make your sessions fun and competitive. No matter what age group or gender you coach just ensure that everything you do is exciting and engaging for all of the individuals who attend.

From previous experience playing and coaching soccer, I can tell you the one thing that can stop any session in its tracks is boredom. Not being able to engage your participants will lead them to finding other ways of becoming entertained, often at the expense of those in your sessions.

As a general rule of thumb, I tend to coach the skill on its own, followed by use of that skill in a short and sharp drill before turning the session into a competition of some sort. This ensures you have given your coaching points, demonstrated technique and have allowed the individual to perform that skill in a competitive game like scenario. Often completed without participants realizing their increased levels of development, maintaining a fun and exciting environment.

What is the one soccer session that has made the greatest impact on improving your teams?
In general, I don’t have one specific drill that works for every individual, as different techniques and motivations suit different people. However, the one core essence within each of my sessions is always competition. Whether I’m training a U-10 team with a competition against the coaches or an individual striving for progression; all final sections of my sessions will demonstrate some form of competition.

Why? Competition is the closest technique that replicates a real life game situation. It pushes all participants to reach that next level, while training and developing their skills at the same time. It is also a great tool to help measure the long term development of your players. Keeping track of scores throughout competitions, then measuring them against scores later in the season can help determine if your training and coaching is reaping the rewards you expect to see.
