Prior to an official match, I always include agility and short burst speed drills to activate the neuromuscular system and promote quick changes of direction. These are drills that are implemented after a dynamic warm-up and prior to on-field training.

This is a simple drill to set up which includes advancing from basic agility movements to ultimately including touches on the ball. Players are to perform the the movements with speed and precision as well as execute all ball related skills as sharply as possible.

This conditioning drill combines quick foot speed with individual soccer skills. The benefit of this drill is to create progressions and you can also include ladder movements and soccer skills. Be sure to have plenty of balls on hand and make good passes to the players for optimum work efficiency.

This is a both a fun and challenging drill for players. The concept is simple. One player tries to reach one of the cones on either side without allowing his partner to reach it at the same time. The idea is to make quick feints and explosive lateral movements for the offensive player, and for the defensive player to react and match the offensive player’s movements. These Cruz Azul under-20 players enjoy this drill which makes it even more effective.

This is called the pro agility soccer drill. Instead of touching the line, I have players touch cones to assure they don’t cheat the drill. These are under-20 players performing this drill.

This is a speed and agility training session. The main coaching points include making sure the changes of direction are quick with no rounding, and to spend as little time as possible on the ground during jumps.
